A lot of people feel a designer’s job is just to put shapes, colors, and texts together and so anyone can easily do the work of a designer but a designer’s job is way far from this. For any design to look good and serve its purpose, the designer has to follow the laid down principles of design. I did not know about these principles of design until recently although I always put some of them into consideration when designing. Here are 5 principles of design:

1) Proximity: When designing always put things that are related close to one another. For example, When designing a login page, don’t allow the email and password textboxes to be miles away since they are related, they should be close to each other. In summary, related things should be grouped.

2) Alignment: Always stick to a particular type of alignment when designing. If you are using center alignment when designing a card in your design use the center alignment throughout the card design and vice versa

3) White Space: The use of white space is essential because it serves as a breathing space in designs. Always give every content in your design enough white space around and between them as it helps people understand your design better.

4) Repetition: Consistency is very important in designs. When designing always use the same color palette, button size, text field size, etc on every page of the app or website so that all the different pages on the app or website have the same look and feel.

5) Contrast: This helps to create emphasis on designs. It helps to draw users’ attention to things that are very important on the app or website. This can be done by using colors, increasing the weight and size of the text or shape, etc.

As a designer, you have to be familiar with these principles of design because they help to create beautiful and userfriendly designs.
